Robinhood wants US crypto perps. LIT fell 17%
Robinhood plans leveraged crypto contracts through Bitstamp. It also routes a separate Wallet product through Lighter, making this a competition and distribution story at the same time.
Article
Robinhood wants to bring leveraged crypto trading into its main U.S. app.
The company says eligible customers will be able to trade perpetual futures on eight crypto assets in the coming months. BTC and ETH can use up to 10x leverage. SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE can use up to 3x.
LIT, the token connected to the Lighter trading protocol, fell about 17% over 24 hours as the announcement circulated.
That looks like a simple competitor story. It is not.
Robinhood has two different perps products
The announced brokerage product runs through Robinhood Derivatives and Bitstamp. Customers will fund a separate perps account inside Robinhood, choose leverage and hold positions without an expiry date.
Robinhood Wallet already documents another route. That non-custodial product sends USDG into a Lighter smart contract on Robinhood Chain. Users sign trades on their device, and Lighter handles the onchain position.
So Robinhood is doing two things at once:
- It is becoming a direct competitor with its own U.S. brokerage product through Bitstamp.
- It is also giving Lighter a distribution path through Robinhood Wallet.
The products serve different users and keep funds in different places. Combining them into one story would hide the most useful part.
What the contracts actually do
A perp lets someone bet on price without buying the underlying crypto. A long position benefits when the price rises. A short position benefits when it falls.
Leverage makes the position larger than the collateral behind it. With $100 and 5x leverage, the trader has about $500 of exposure. A 2% move changes the position by about $10 before fees and funding.
If losses reduce the collateral too far, the position can be liquidated. Robinhood says the announced product will show liquidation prices and support stop-loss and take-profit orders.

Why LIT moved
Robinhood can put a competing trading product in front of a large U.S. customer base. That can change expectations about where perps volume and fees will go.
CoinDesk reported that LIT fell about 17% over 24 hours and placed its market value near $2.1 billion. The timing makes the announcement relevant, but it does not prove Robinhood caused the full move. Crypto prices were also moving across the market.
The Wallet relationship creates a counterpoint. If Robinhood brings more users into its onchain wallet, Lighter could gain activity even while the brokerage product competes for another part of the market.
What traders should watch
- Rollout: Robinhood says the brokerage product is coming in the next few months. Availability and eligibility still matter.
- Where activity lands: Wallet trades route through Lighter. Brokerage trades route through Bitstamp.
- Fee capture: Trading volume is not the same as token value. The economic link to LIT must be measured rather than assumed.
- Risk controls: Leverage, funding and liquidation can erase collateral quickly.
The price reaction says traders noticed a new competitor. The product map says the relationship is more complicated: Robinhood can help Lighter reach users while competing with it somewhere else.
