THE GLOSSARY / W

What is a blockchain bridge?

A bridge helps move assets or information between blockchains, with risks that depend on how the connection works.

Version 1

A bridge connects blockchain ecosystems so assets or information can be used across them.

Imagine you have funds on one blockchain, but an app you want to use works on another. A bridge can arrange the transfer. This is a hypothetical example, not a recommendation of a route.

A little more technical

Different designs use different mechanisms. Some hold assets on one side and issue a representation on the other. The original coin does not necessarily travel intact between two systems.

Common misunderstanding

“Bridged” does not mean risk-free. Software bugs, operator powers and the security of the connected networks can affect your funds. A comparison app can make routes easier to choose without removing these risks.
